Pietro combines scientific expertise, European regulatory experience and business development capabilities to help food and nutrition companies translate innovation into market opportunities. Within Intertek Assuris Food & Nutrition, he supports regulatory strategy and scientific programs for food ingredients, food supplements and innovative products, aligning evidence requirements with clients’ development priorities and commercial objectives.
Before joining Intertek, Pietro spent five years as a Senior Scientific Officer at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), within its Nutrition and Food Innovation Unit. This experience provides an in-depth understanding of scientific risk assessment, dossier requirements and the processes supporting the evaluation of regulated products at EU level.
His expertise includes Novel Foods, Health Claims, Food Additives and Food Enzymes, with particular interest in biotechnology-derived ingredients, precision fermentation, alternative proteins and microbiome-derived products.
Pietro’s scientific background supports the critical appraisal of research evidence and its translation into robust regulatory arguments. Working with Food&Nutrition specialists in toxicology, microbiology, bioinformatics, nutrition and dietary exposure, he helps develop coherent EU dossier submissions that address the identity, safety and intended uses of ingredients, or the scientific substantiation of proposed health claims.
Alongside his regulatory responsibilities, Pietro develops client relationships and tailored consulting programs for start-ups, SMEs and VC funds. He connects scientific and regulatory requirements with decisions on product development, market entry, resource allocation and international expansion, coordinating with Intertek’s global Food & Nutrition team projects across jurisdictions.
