What Architects, Owners, and Manufacturers Should Know About Resilience, Risk, and Long-Term Performance
The 2026 AIA Conference on Architecture & Design, held June 10-13 in San Diego, brought together architects, designers, engineers, contractors, owners, manufacturers, and other building industry professionals to discuss where the built environment is headed next.
While the conference covered topics ranging from artificial intelligence to regenerative design, one theme emerged repeatedly across keynote presentations, workshops, and committee meetings: resilience is rapidly becoming a core expectation of professional practice.
For building owners, developers, manufacturers, and design professionals, that shift carries practical implications. Resilience is no longer being treated only as a specialized service or an optional upgrade. It is becoming part of how projects are planned, designed, evaluated, and financed.
Resilience Is Moving into the Mainstream
One of the clearest takeaways from AIA26 was the growing expectation that project teams should assess natural hazard and climate-related risks, communicate those risks to clients, and document the decisions that follow.
Discussions also reinforced an important point: code compliance is not the same as risk elimination. Current building codes set minimum requirements, but they may not address the full range of hazards a building could face over its service life.
That does not mean every project requires major hardening or expensive resilience upgrades. It means project teams are expected to identify foreseeable hazards, evaluate possible consequences, and help owners make informed decisions about acceptable levels of risk.
For building owners and developers, those conversations can influence asset value, operational disruption, insurance availability, tenant expectations, investor confidence, and long-term risk management. Organizations that address resilience early may be better positioned to protect investments, reduce uncertainty, and support competitiveness.
The Evolving Standard of Care
I had the opportunity to lead a workshop at the conference titled Talking Risk & Resilience with Clients: From Concept to Commitment. The session focused on one of the harder parts of resilience practice: helping architects and consultants have useful conversations with clients who may be skeptical of investments beyond minimum code requirements.
Through interactive role-playing exercises, participants worked through scenarios involving developers, property owners, and project stakeholders with different views on risk, cost, performance, and value.
The goal was not to persuade every client to pursue the most resilient design possible. It was to show how design professionals can help clients understand risks, compare options, and make decisions that align with their business objectives.
Tools such as the AIA Hazard and Climate Risk Acknowledgment Form and the AIA Resilience Design Toolkit give firms a structured way to introduce hazard risk earlier in the design process. By identifying relevant hazards and documenting decisions, project teams can improve alignment among owners, designers, consultants, and other stakeholders.
A New Commitment to Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience
Another important development at AIA26 was the launch of the AIA Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Commitment.
The commitment, announced by 2026 AIA President, Illya Azaroff, FAIA, in San Diego, is designed to help architects integrate disaster risk reduction, hazard mitigation, and resilience planning into new construction and renovation projects.
For building owners and manufacturers, this evolution will likely influence project expectations, design processes, documentation practices, and performance requirements in the years ahead.
What This Means for Building Product Manufacturers
The resilience discussion extends beyond architects and engineers. Product manufacturers play an important role in helping project teams evaluate how materials, assemblies, and systems perform under real-world conditions.
Whether a project is addressing extreme heat, wildfire exposure, severe storms, flooding, moisture intrusion, or operational continuity, manufacturers are often the source of the testing, certification, and performance data that support design decisions.
As resilience becomes more common in project planning, manufacturers may see growing demand for information related to long-term durability, service life, extreme weather performance, building enclosure resilience, indoor environmental quality, flood resistance, wind resistance, fire resistance, third-party verification, lifecycle performance, and maintenance requirements.
Manufacturers that can clearly explain these attributes and support them with credible testing, certification, and documentation will be better positioned to meet evolving market expectations.
Looking Ahead
For owners and developers, resilience conversations are becoming business conversations. Many AIA26 discussions touched on insurance availability, operational continuity, tenant expectations, asset valuation, ESG reporting, climate-risk disclosure, and portfolio strategy.
AIA26 reinforced that resilience is no longer a side conversation in the design and construction industry. It is becoming part of how buildings are planned, evaluated, and delivered.
For architects, that means continuing to develop processes for identifying and communicating hazard risks. For building owners, it means making informed decisions about risk tolerance and performance. For manufacturers, it creates opportunities to show how products contribute to safer, more durable, and more resilient buildings.
As environmental conditions continue to change, resilience will remain closely tied to building performance, risk management, and long-term value.
